Classic Arts News 'Play-Opera' by Wallace and Allen Shawn Set for Premiere The Music Teacher, a "play-opera' by playwright Wallace Shawn and composer Allen Shawn, will get its world premiere at the Minetta Lane Theatre in Manhattan on February 21.
The work is "a story of creation and sexual obsession" about a teacher and student who compose and perform an opera. Mark Blum and Kellie Overbey star; the cast of singers and actors includes tenor Jeffrey Pic‹n, who has appeared with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and soprano Sarah Wolfson, who has sung with Santa Fe Opera.

Wallace Shawn, known as a stage and film actor as well as a playwright, is the author most recently of The Designated Mourner. Allen Shawn, who is his brother, has composed chamber music, orchestral works, song cycles, and music for ballet and theater.

Tom Cairns, a veteran of productions at the Royal Opera, Opera North, and the Bavarian State Opera, is the director; New York City Opera associate conductor Timothy Long is the musical director.
