News Playwrights for Pets' May 19 Benefit Features Works by Dudley, Silverman, Vela Playwrights for Pets, the organization dedicated to "making theatre to benefit animals in need," presents an evening of five staged readings May 19 at Animal Haven in Manhattan.

Titled Between Man & Beast, the evening features works penned by playwrights Bill Dudley, Evan Guilford-Blake, V.E. Kimberlin, Judd Lear Silverman and Ed Vela. The ensemble of actors includes James Arden, Kaseem Bristow, Erin Cronican, Eric Hunt, Jonna McElrath and Annie Pesch. Show time is 7:30 PM.

The plays scheduled to be read are A Lovely Moon by Evan Guilford-Blake, in which "a reasonable woman, longing for a change, brings her best friend to meet the new 'creature' in her life"; God Dog by Ed Vela, the story of "a suicidal writer talked off a ledge by a rather verbal, intellectual dog"; Identity Crisis by V.E. Kimberlin, a play in which a "couple question their own sexual identities once their kitten provides an unexpected surprise"; The Bride by Judd Lear Silverman, a tale based on a true story about "a boy from a small tribe in Eastern India who has been married off to a neighbor's dog for his own protection"; and Parrots of the Caribbean by Bill Dudley, a raucous comedy about "a pirate ship, a kidnapped contessa, a pirate captain in a quandary and a young deckhand who gets a most unlikely promotion."

All proceeds go to Animal Haven, the animal shelter/adoption center that cares for dogs and cats.
