Based on the film of the same title, Far From Heaven has a book by Tony Award winner Richard Greenberg (Take Me Out) and a score by Frankel (music) and Korie (lyrics). Tony nominee Michael Greif (Grey Gardens, Rent, Next to Normal) directs the production that will premiere at the Williamstown Theatre Festival this summer.

Playwrights Horizons, which commissioned the work, has not announced dates of production. Grey Gardens also premiered at Playwrights prior to its acclaimed Broadway transfer.

Here's how the musical is billed: "Cathy Whitaker seems to be the picture-perfect wife and mother in 1957 suburban Connecticut. But roiling beneath the surface, secret longings and forbidden desires cause her world to unravel––with incendiary consequences. With a lush score that is both jazz-inflected and hauntingly lyrical, Far From Heaven is a powerful story of romance, betrayal, intolerance and a woman grappling with her identity in a society on the verge of great upheaval."

Also announced is the world premiere of Annie Baker's The Flick, which will reunite the playwright with Circle Mirror Transformation director Sam Gold. The new play is described as such: "In a run-down movie theater in central Massachusetts, three underpaid employees mop the floors and attend to one of the last 35 millimeter film projectors in New England. Their tiny battles, and not-so-tiny heartbreaks, play out in the empty aisles, becoming more gripping than the lackluster, second-run movies on screen. With keen insight and a finely-tuned comic eye, The Flick is a hilarious and heart-rending cry for authenticity in a fast-changing world."

The Great God Pan, a new work by playwright Amy Herzog (After the Revolution, 4000 Miles), will also debut. Carolyn Cantor will direct. According to Playwrights Horizons, "Jamie's life in Brooklyn seems just fine: a beautiful girlfriend, a budding journalism career, and parents who live just far enough away. But when a possible childhood trauma comes to light, lives are thrown into a tailspin. Unsettling and deeply compassionate, The Great God Pan tells the intimate tale of what is lost and won when a hidden truth is unloosed into the world."

Tony Award nominee Leigh Silverman (Well, Chinglish) will direct the world premiere of Tanya Barfield's The Call.

"When Annie and Peter decide to adopt, they come to set their sights on a child from Africa," according to press notes. "But when the reality of this choice sinks in, it opens a well of uncertainty that speaks to their very identity as White Americans. Politically-charged and tack-sharp, The Call is a startling portrait of cultural divide, casting global issues into the heart of an American home."

Samuel D. Hunter's The Whale will receive its New York debut as part of the 2012-2013 season. Davis McCallum (A Bright New Boise, Queens Boulevard, Elliot: A Soldier's Fugue) will direct.

Production notes state: "On the outskirts of Mormon Country, Idaho, a six-hundred pound recluse hides away in his apartment eating himself to death. Desperate to reconnect with his long-estranged daughter, he reaches out to her, only to find a viciously sharp-tongued and wildly unhappy teen. Big-hearted and fiercely funny, The Whale tells the story of a man's last chance at redemption, and of finding beauty in the most unexpected places."

As previously reported, Playwrights Horizons will also present Lisa D'Amour's critically acclaimed 2011 Pulitzer Prize finalist play Detroit as part of its upcoming season. Anne Kauffman (Maple and Vine, The Thugs, Stunning) will direct the new production of the play that premiered at the Steppenwolf Theatre. It will launch Plawrights Horizons' 2012-2013 season this August.

Playwrights Horizons is under the leadership of artistic director Tim Sanford and managing director Leslie Marcus.
