The San Diego company announced its forthcoming 2008 summer lineup that is scheduled to play the Old Globe's stages. Shakespeare Festival artistic director Darko Tresnjak returns to spearhead the Bard event (as well as stage the Taylor-Skinner work).
"We are pleased to continue the season on our second stage without interruption during the construction phase of our capital campaign in 2008 and 2009," said executive director Louis Spisto in the announcement. "The Globe will be creating a special theatrical space in the Copley Auditorium to host our second stage productions. This space will be modeled on the Cassius Carter Centre Stage, with matching arena-style stage and seating plan, so that our patrons will still have the intimate, theatre-in-the-round experience next door. We are deeply grateful to the San Diego Museum of Art for making the space available."
The 2008 Shakespeare Festival will feature Romeo and Juliet as directed by Richard Seer (Globe's 2007 Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?); The Merry Wives of Windsor staged by Paul Mullins (last summer's Measure for Measure); and All's Well That Ends Well with Tresnjak at the helm. All three works will be seen in nightly rotation (June 14-Sept. 28, 2008) at the outdoor Lowell Davies Festival Theatre.
The Pleasure of His Company (July 12-Aug. 17, 2008 the Old Globe Theatre) centers on a San Francisco debutante ready to wed her Napa Valley cattle rancher beau but wishes her 15-years estranged father — an international playboy — would come to give her away. "But his arrival disrupts the entire household as he tries to entice Jessica into traveling the world with him, show up her fiancé, and win back the affections of his ex-wife," as notes describe.
Sight Unseen (Aug. 2-Sept. 7, 2008 at San Diego Museum of Art's Copley Auditorium) finds a celebrated American artist who reconnects with his former muse seeking to revive the passion and creativity he once had. Show notes reveal that "the visit – along with a troubling interview with a German art critic who questions his motives as a Jewish painter – leads to an unexpected crisis of identity."
