Classic Arts News Pop Singer Elvis Costello to Write Opera About Hans Christian Anderson Elvis Costello will write an opera about the fairy tale writer Hans Christian Anderson for Copenhagen's new opera house, the Associated Press reports.
The opera, titled The Secret Arias, explores the Danish writer's unrequited love for the soprano Jenny Lind‹the "Swedish Nightingale"‹and is based on songs written by Anderson for Lind.

Costello will perform songs from The Secret Arias at the Copenhagen Opera House this fall, and the complete work will premiere in the venue's smaller, 200-seat theater in 2006.

The pop singer has a longstanding interest in classical music, and has recorded with Brodsky String Quartet and mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter. His first full-scale orchestral work, Il sogno, premiered in Italy in 2000 and was heard at the 2004 Lincoln Center Festival.
