Postponed Andr_ Previn Premiere in Sacramento Rescheduled for Fall 2006

Classic Arts News   Postponed Andr_ Previn Premiere in Sacramento Rescheduled for Fall 2006
Andr_ Previn has completed a new work commissioned by the Sacramento Philharmonic, the orchestra announced.

The work, titled Night Thoughts, was commissioned in honor of Sacramento-based artist Wayne Thiebaud. It was originally scheduled to premiere in April 2005, but in February, Previn told the orchestra that the work would not be finished in time. At the time, the composer and conductor said that he would provide a new estimated delivery date sometime this summer.

But when a representative of Previn's publisher called recently, music director Michael Morgan said in a statement, "She brought the news that the piece was finished! It will be another four to six weeks before the orchestrations are completed— but we were only expecting news of a projected completion date. This is wonderful."

Morgan has tentatively scheduled the world premiere of the piece for the first concert of the 2006-07 season, on October 14, 2006. The season, the Philharmonic's tenth, will also include two other world-premiere commissions.

Previn said, "I am so pleased to have been asked to write a piece in honor of Wayne Thiebaud—an artist I have truly admired for many years. The piece, Night Thoughts, is now completed and I very much look forward to celebrating Wayne's birthday with him in fall 2006 at the premiere."
