News Public Theater Expands Emerging Writers Group to Two-Year Program The Public Theater's Emerging Writers Group, which nurtures the work of early-career playwrights over the course of a year, will transition into a two-year program thanks to funding from Time Warner.

Now in its third year, the Emerging Writers Group will subsequently admit playwrights every other year. The current group of writers, who were announced this past January, will continue on for an additional year. The Public will accept applications for the 2012 group in summer 2011.

The Emerging Writers Group Spotlight Series, which allows each playwright the opportunity to showcase his or her work, will now occur biennially. It is also the Public's aim to create additional interaction for group alumni.

Each participant of the writers group receives a $3,000 stipend, and participates in biweekly writers group sessions and master classes with established playwrights. Participants also have the chance to observe rehearsals for productions at the Public.

Time Warner's continued funding will also allow the Public to continue its support of writers at each stage of their professional careers as part of the Public Theater Writers Initiative.
