The 8 PM encore was viewed by 3.16 million viewers, a marked decline from the Dec. 5 live-event broadcast, which captured 18.6 million viewers. The ratings drop for the previously aired special event was not unexpected; with the popularity of DVR and on-demand programming, live events on television have become a significant source for bankable viewership.
The Sound of Music Live! was bested by CBS' holiday offerings, including "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," "Frosty the Snowman" and "Frosty Returns."
NBC is currently working to select a musical title to air live during the 2014 holiday season.
The Sound of Music Live! will be released on DVD Dec. 17. The companion soundtrack is now available.
