Classic Arts News Rattle Replaces Ozawa at Salzburg Easter Festival Simon Rattle will step in for the ailing Seiji Ozawa at the Salzburg Easter Festival next month, the Austrian Associated Press reports.
Ozawa was scheduled to conduct the Berlin Philharmonic on April 9 and 16 in a program of Schoenberg and Beethoven. Instead, Rattle will lead Mozart's Piano Concerto in B major, Brahms' Second Symphony, and Sibelius's The Swan of Tuonela. Alfred Brendel is the piano soloist.

Rattle was already scheduled to lead the Philharmonic in two other programs at the festival, as well as conducting a production of Debussy's Pell_as et M_lisande.

The festival also announced that bass Robert Lloyd would replace Lšszl‹ Polgšr in the role of King Arkel in Pell_as.

Ozawa was hospitalized in Japan in January, suffering from bronchial infection and an outbreak of shingles that affected one of his eyes. He canceled a series of appearances at the Vienna State Opera, but said through the Boston Symphony last month that he intended to return to the podium by the summer.
