News Reading of A Tomato Can't Grow in the Bronx, With Brooke Shields, Robin Strasser, Presented Dec. 20 Stage and screen star Brooke Shields, currently back on Broadway in the new musical The Addams Family, takes part in an industry-only reading of Gary Morgenstein's new play, A Tomato Can't Grow in the Bronx, Dec. 20.

Producer Aaron Grant is presenting the reading at the Jerry Orbach Theatre at the Snapple Theatre Center.

Directed by Philip Morgaman, the 3:30 PM reading features Shields as Eleanor Abrams, "the neurotic, only daughter of Harry, a domineering old school (and fading) Bronx big shot, with dreams of breaking free of her own fears and moving into a home of her own on Long Island, along with her teenage son Elliot and husband Sammy," according to press notes.

Shields is joined by Aaron Simon Gross as her son Elliot, Sam Seder as her husband Sammy, Emmy Award-winning actress Robin Strasser ("One Life to Live") as Gladys, Larry Pine ("Oz," "Law & Order") as Harry and Elana Safar as Madeline.

Morgenstein's plays also include Ponzi Man and Mad Mel & the Marradians.

Executive producer is Aaron Grant; the general manager is Kelvin Productions, LLC; and casting is by Daryl Eisenberg Casting.

Jerry Orbach Theatre at Snapple Theatre Center is located at 1627 Broadway, third floor. Industry folk interested in attending the reading should e-mail [email protected].
