Four screening and discussions remain on the 92nd St Y's "Reel Pieces" schedule. Dr. Annette Insdorf, director of film studies at Columbia University, will introduce the following films and then interview the artists on stage. A question and answer period with the audience follows each interview.
Actress Sigourney Weaver will be on hand Nov. 17 for the screening and discussion of director Scott Elliott's new film, “A Map of the World.”
The film is being released for one week in December for Academy Award consideration, but this special early preview will be followed by an on stage interview of Weaver and a subsequent question and answer session with the audience.
Adapted from Jane Hamilton’s novel, the film is about a woman who undergoes a "harrowing transformation." It also stars Julianne Moore and David Strathairn. Weaver starred on stage in Hurlyburly, Lulu and Sex and Longing and has emerged as one of the strongest female performers of the past two decades, in such films as “Alien,” “Gorillas in the Mist,” “The Year of Living Dangerously” and “The Ice Storm.”
Director Scott Elliott has directed such acclaimed productions as Ecstacy, Curtains and Goose-Pimples. On Broadway, his credits include Present Laughter and Three Sisters. Next on the schedule is Academy Award-winning actor Christopher Walken, who will be at the 92nd St. Y on Dec. 2 when an as-yet-to-be named film will be screened. Walken's prolific career began on the New York stage in 1959 with J.B. His appeared in his first musical in 1963 with Best Foot Forward (Clarence Derwent Award) and was later seen in The Rose Tatoo, Uncle Vanya, House of Blue Leaves and Kid Champion (Obie Award), among others. Now a pop icon, Walken's film credits include “Pulp Fiction,” “King of New York,” “Biloxi Blues,” “At Close Range,” “Pennies From Heaven” and “The Deer Hunter” (Oscar for Best Supporting Actor). He is currently starring Off-Broadway in The Dead.
Dec. 6 marks the screening of the 1996 film “Bastard out of Carolina” with the Academy Award-winning actress Anjelica Huston. Now a director as well, Huston is the daughter of legendary director John Huston. Her film credits include “The Dead,” “Prizzi’s Honor,” “Crimes and Misdemeanors” and the upcoming “Agnes Browne,” her directorial debut.
The 92nd Street Y notes the substitution of Dec. 6 for an earlier show advertised for Nov. 11 that has been canceled. Patrons with Nov. 11 tickets will be honored on Dec. 6 when that program takes place at Caspary Auditorium, Rockefeller University, 1230 York Avenue.
