Two open casting calls, in Los Angeles and New York, are being planned to find Carney's replacement. Hopefuls "should be males in their late teens to early twenties of any ethnicity and must have a great rock singing voice. They can be nerdy with an understated sex appeal and a good sense of humor."

The production will also use these open calls to find a future Mary Jane. Hopefuls for that role "should be females in their late teens to early twenties of any ethnicity. Ideal candidates will be 'beautiful girl next door' types with strong pop/rock singing voices."

Those auditioning should be prepared to sing a rock song a cappella, showing off his or her range. They should also have sheet music on hand for that song in the event that they are asked to sing with the piano accompanist. Hopefuls are asked not to prepare any music from Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark. Everyone should bring a photo or snapshot and a resume stapled together.

The Los Angeles open call will be held Aug. 12 from 10 AM-5 PM (sign-in begins at 9:30 AM) at Hollywood United Methodist Church (6817 Franklin Ave. at Highland Ave. in Hollywood, CA). The New York open call will be held Aug. 19 from 10 AM-5 PM (sign-in begins at 9:30 AM) at Stage 48 & Sky-Lounge (605 West 48th Street between 11th and 12th Aves. in New York, NY).

Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark features music and lyrics by Grammy Award winners Bono and The Edge and a book co-written by Julie Taymor, Glen Berger and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, with direction by Taymor and additional direction by Philip William McKinley. Scenic designer George Tsypin and costume designer Eiko Ishioka are winners of Outer Critics Circle Awards and were nominated for Tony Awards for their work on Spider-Man. Here's how the musical is billed: "Peter Parker's ordinary teenage life takes a turn for the extraordinary when he’s bitten by a genetically altered spider and suddenly finds himself endowed with incredible superpowers. Parker quickly learns that with great power comes great responsibility as he tries to juggle the demands of high school and home life, while battling the Green Goblin and his band of super villains as they try to take down New York City and destroy everything Peter holds dear – including the beautiful girl-next-door, Mary Jane Watson."
