Most people associate the 1967 musical film, Thoroughly Modern Millie with stars Julie Andrews, Mary Tyler Moore and Carol Channing, but that could change in 1999 when, according to Variety and confirmed by Michael Leavitt of Fox Theatricals, a stage version of the piece could come to Broadway.

"It's a stage version of the original movie," Leavitt told Playbill On-Line. "We're developing it now. The script is in really good shape, and we'd like to do a workshop by the end of the year." The current focus is on seeing which songs from the movie to maintain, while adding "different songs from that era, plus new songs." Leavitt declined to say which composer(s) was involved in the project.

Leavitt did confirm the Variety report (Apr. 16) that Fox Theatricals is in talks with Whoopi Goldberg to co-produce this stage adaptation of the George Roy Hill movie. (Goldberg confirmed with Variety that she's in discussions on producing the project.) The show's libretto will be based on the Richard Morris screenplay and penned by Morris and Dick Scanlon, an editor at Poz magazine. (Morris died last year after completing work on the script with Scanlon.)

Michael Mayer, who staged the musical Triumph of Love and the acclaimed current revival of A View From The Bridge at Broadway's Roundabout Theatre, has signed to direct. He's also scheduled to direct Side Man and The Mineola Twin on Broadway during the 1998–99 season. Not only that, he's been tapped to direct a Fox Theatricals mounting of You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown, bound for Broadway spring 1999.

Meanwhile, Thoroughly Modern Millie is targeting a fall workshop and spring 1999 opening. Casting has yet to be announced.
