Plans for a Broadway musical based on the life of legendary singer Frank Sinatra, as recently reported in the New York Post, may be nothing more than witchcraft, as Cy Coleman's song goes. Post reporter Ward Morehouse III quoted Broadway producer Stewart Lane (1776) as considering a musical about the legendary singer, who died May 14 at age 82. Lane said he had asked composer Coleman (The Life, City of Angels, Sweet Charity) to sign on for the venture, tentatively planned for winter 1999. A spokesperson at Cy Coleman's office, however, said the article was "premature," and that the project "may happen and it may not." The representative would not say specifically whether Lane had contacted Coleman or not. Lane did not return a phone call.

The Goodspeed Opera House of Connecticut is currently housing the new non-Sinatra Coleman musical Exactly Like You, with a book by A.E. Hotchner, under the direction on Patricia Birch. The show runs through May 31. Spokesman Howard Sherman told Playbill On-Line May 27 that New York producers have been calling steadily for house seats, but no deal for a post-Goodspeed production has yet been signed.
