Jerry Herman's Miss Spectacular, his once-and-future musical project for Las Vegas, seems one step closer to a Glitter Gulch reality, the New York Post reported July 17.

New York producers Ben Sprecher and Kenneth Greenblatt have "struck a deal" with Herman to stage the Vegas-set show in Vegas, according to the paper. The show was once slated for a lavish hotel production by Steve Wynn, but when his properties changed hands, Herman's work got lost in the shuffle. Miss Spectacular — which Herman told Playbill On-Line he owns outright — is about a star-struck Kansas girl named Sarah Jane Hotchkiss who has fantasies about being a glamorous Vegas showgirl, and hoofs it to Nevada to compete in a contest. Her dismayed boyfriend pursues her. It all ends very nicely, and very spectacularly, in a desert wedding chapel.

The score, released on a studio-recording CD recently, is full of bouncy show tunes from the man who gave us Hello, Dolly!, Mame and La Cage aux Folles.

Some might say the bookless show (there is only a plot outline at this point) might be worthy of Broadway, which supports such bright-eyed shows as 42nd Street, but Sprecher (Fortune's Fool) and Greenblatt (Big) are aiming at the easier-to-please market of Las Vegas, the Post said, adding that a tour is possible. Tommy Tune has been mentioned as a potential director-choreographer for the project.
