The National Yiddish Theatre Folskbiene’s revival of Amerike—The Golden Land has announced a two-week extension. Zalmen Mlotek and Moishe Rosenfeld’s 1984 musical, originally titled The Golden Land, will now play through August 20 at the Museum of Jewish Heritage.
Amerike—The Golden Land officially opened Off-Broadway July 10.
Set in New York City’s Lower East Side and of the outer-borough neighborhoods to which the Jewish population gravitated, the musical weaves stories and observations of real-life immigrants collected by Mlotek and Rosenfeld. They are tales of love, heartbreak, poverty, and racism.
The production, which is staged in Yiddish with English supertitles, began performances July 4.
Directed by Drama Desk Award nominee Bryna Wasserman, the cast is made up of Glenn Seven Allen (The Light in the Piazza), Alexandra Frohlinger (Soul Doctor), Daniel Kahn (Death of a Salesman), Dani Marcus (A Gentleman’s Guide…), Stephanie Lynne Mason (Fiddler on the Roof), and David Perlman (Baby It’s You!). Jessica Rose Futran and Christopher Tefft are the understudies.
The show’s ensemble is made up of Grant Richards, Maya Jacobson, Alexander Kosmowski, Raquel Nobile, Isabel Nesti, and Bobby Underwood.
“It is a snapshot of time, in which we mix the familiar and unfamiliar, real-life events, historic events with the domestic lives of the characters,” commented Wasserman, who directed NYTF’s acclaimed revival of The Golden Bride, in an earlier statement. “It’s as if we were watching the pages of American social history come to life.”
Music direction and arrangements are by Zalmen Mlotek. The production’s casting and general management are supervised by Jamibeth Margolis, CSA, with production oversight by two-time Tony Award-nominated and two-time Drama Desk Award-nominated producer, Christopher Massimine.
The production team also includes scenic designer Jason Courson, lighting designer Yael Lubetzky, costume designer Izzy Fields, props designer Colleen Lynch, sound designer Patrick Calhoun and movement director Merete Muenter. Eileen Haggerty is the production stage manager.
