Goodspeed Musicals launches a developmental production of Cutman: a boxing musical, the story of a young Jewish boxer pulled between faith and stardom in the ring, May 12 at the Norma Terris Theatre in Chester, CT. Performances play June 5. The Terris is devoted to shaping new works, and is not open to drama critics.

Cutman is billed as "the dramatic story of a young Jewish boxer, Ari Hoffman, who dreams of being the Welter-Weight Champion of the World. Trained by his father, Eli, in the basement of their synagogue, he turns pro and takes the boxing world by storm. But when his shot at the title fight is scheduled on the eve of Yom Kippur, he must choose between achieving his lifelong dream and defying his faith. From rock to pop to hip-hop to R&B, Cutman boasts a contemporary score that is sure to pack a knockout punch."

The title refers to the man in the corner of the ring who fixes the boxers' cuts. In this case, the father is also the cutman.

The musical has music and lyrics by Drew Brody, book by Jared Michael Coseglia (who also directs), with a story by Jared Michael Coseglia and Cory Grant.

Grant recently starred as Frankie Valli in Broadway's Jersey Boys. Tony-nominated actor Cuccioli (playing Eli Hoffman) was Broadway's Jekyll & Hyde. Laura Dean (as Edi Hoffman) returns to Goodspeed after playing an orphan in the 1976 premiere of Annie. Her Broadway credits include The Who's Tommy and Doonesbury.

The role of Olivia is played by Ana Nogueira. Rabbi Roseman is played by Mitchell Greenberg of Broadway's Ain't Broadway Grand and 3 Penny Opera. Moe Green is played by Dennis Stowe of Broadway's Shrek The Musical and The Apple Tree.

Garrett Long, who plays Cantor Aviva, and Jerold Solomon, who plays Lincoln, both appeared in Broadway's South Pacific.

The ensemble includes Joshua Boone, Jadi Collado, Ven Daniel, Albert Guerzon, Haley Hannah, Joshua Keith and Eileen Tepper.

Cutman book writer and director Jared Michael Coseglia was assistant director of Broadway's Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks. Lisa Stevens, who was choreographer for the national tours of 9 to 5, Bombay Dreams and High School Musical, is the choreographer.

The production team includes set designer Adrian W. Jones, costume designer Wade Laboissonniere, lighting designer Jason Lyons, sound designer Jay Hilton, music director Andrew Sotomayor, orchestrator Matt Hinkley. Cutman is produced for Goodspeed Musicals by Michael P. Price.
