Patinkin, a Tony and Emmy Award winner, asked producers to release him from his contract, citing creative differences. The departure, which was publicly discussed by Patinkin and CBS in press statements, appeared amicable, with both parties wishing one another well. Mantegna, who won a Tony for his work in David Mamet's Glengarry Glen Ross, isn't expected to appear until the November sweeps, according to TV Guide.
Mantegna previously worked on the hit television series "Joan of Arcadia" for CBS television. His Broadway credits also include Speed-the-Plow and Working.
"Criminal Minds" airs on CBS Wednesdays at 9PM (ET); check local listings.
