News Royal Court's International Playwright Season Announced

The Royal Court may have a reputation - dating back to John Osborne's Look Back in Anger in 1956 - for radical British plays, but it is also a showcase for the best of International writing.

This week sees the beginning of the Royal Court's International Playwrights Season, which begins with Push Up by Roland Scimmelpfennig. Directed by Ramin Grey, designed and lit by Rodney Grant and with sound by Ian Dickinson, it casts a theatrical eye on office politics and the urge to push up the career ladder.

Unusually, there are two press nights - Feb. 11 and 12, for this play by one of Germany's most exciting writers. During the run of Push Up there will be rehearsed readings of Scimmelpfennig's Arabian Night and Parasites by Marius von Mayenburg.

The season continues, from March 15 to April 6, with Vassily Sigarev's Plasticine, translated by Sasha Dugdale, which also gets two press nights, on March 20 and 21.

Set in the Urals, the play describes the struggle for survival and self-worth of a teenage boy faced with a disintegrating society - from which he escapes to a private world of his own.

Numerous other short plays, readings and debates based around them will take place at the Royal Court during the International Playwright's Season. Among these are, from March 6 to 9, Steps to Siberia: two young companies from Siberia create an evening inspired by the Royal Court's play development work in Russia. Performed in Russian with English sur-titles. The two plays involved are:The Coalfield and Soldiers' Letters.
