News Rupert Friend to Star in New London Fringe Production of Dennis Potter's Brimstone and Treacle
Rupert Friend will return to the London stage to star in a new production of Dennis Potter's Brimstone and Treacle, beginning performances May 2 at the fringe Arcola Theatre Studio 2, prior to an official opening May 4, for a run through June 2.

The play, originally written for television in 1976 as part of the BBC's "Play for Today" strand, was withdrawn before transmission, and not broadcast until 1987. In 1977 Potter adapted it for the stage, and it premièred at Sheffield Crucible.

According to press materials, it provides a glimpse into middle-class suburban paranoia, xenophobia and insularity. It revolves around  Mr. and Mrs. Bates, a middle-aged, middle-class, North London suburban couple who are struggling to care for their only daughter, Pattie, left severely disabled following a hit-and-run car accident. Out of nowhere, an apparently respectable young man arrives on their doorstep to change their lives forever.

Friend, who plays Martin Taylor, was last seen on the London stage making his West End debut in The Little Dog Laughed at the Garrick Theatre in 2010. His films include "Five Days of War," "Lullaby for Pi," "The Kid," "Chéri," "The Young Victoria," "The Boy in Striped Pyjamas," "Pride and Prejudice" and "The Libertine."

The production is directed by Amelia Sears, with designs by Alex Eales and lighting by Richard Howells. It is produced by SEArED in association with Arcola. SEArED is an independent theatre company founded in 2012 by London-based actor Alex Waldmann.
