Classic Arts News San Francisco Opera to Premiere Work Based on Amy Tan Novel The San Francisco Opera has commissioned an opera from composer Stewart Wallace based on Amy Tan's novel The Bonesetter's Daughter, a spokesperson for the opera confirmed.
The production will premiere during the 2008-09 season.

Wallace's best-known opera is Harvey Milk, which told the story of the murder of the openly gay San Francisco city supervisor. It premiered in 1995 at Houston Grand Opera and was also seen at San Francisco Opera.

The Bonesetter's Daughter is set in China before the communist revolution, as recalled by an elderly Chinese mother in modern-day San Francisco. The libretto will be written by the author; Chen Shi-Zheng will direct. The opera will also be premiered in China in 2008.
