Connecticut’s Hartford Stage has announced casting for its fall production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, helmed by Artistic Director Darko Tresnjak. The company will feature Scarlett Strallen (A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder), who will play Hippolyta and Titania; Esau Pritchett (A Free Man of Color), who will play Theseus and Oberon; and John Lavelle (Selma), who will take on the role of Nick Bottom.

The Shakespearean comedy—an enchanted tale of fairies and misplaced lovers—is set to open Hartford Stage’s 2017–2018 season, beginning performances September 7. The run will continue through October 8.

“We are thrilled to open our 2017-18 season with a celebratory and joyous production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” commented Tresnjak in a press statement. “Both populist and sophisticated, delightful and profound, Midsummer is a play of infinite riches. I believe that it is Shakespeare’s most perfect play.”

Completing the company will be: Will Apicella as Philostrate/Puck, Brent Bateman as Snout, Robert Hannon Davis as Peter Quince/Egeus, Fedna Laure Jacquet as Helena, Jenny Leona as Hermia, Matthew Macca as Francis Flute, Anne O’ Sullivan as First Fairy, Tom Pecinka as Lysander, Alexander Sovronsky as Robin Starveling, Damian Jermaine Thompson as Demetrius, and Louis Tucci as Snug. Melody Atkinson, Gabrielle Filloux, and Madison Vice will play fairies.

The creative team will be made up of set designer Alexander Dodge, costume designer Joshua Pearson, lighting designer York Kennedy, sound designers Broken Chord Collective/Daniel Baker and Aaron Meicht, composer and music director Alexander Sovronsky, fight choreographer Thomas Schall, and voice and text coach Claudia Hill-Sparks. Hartford Stage Associate Artistic Director Elizabeth Williamson will serve as Dramaturg.

Robyn M. Zalewski will be the production stage manager, with Nicole Wiegert as assistant stage manager.
