The recently-opened Los Angeles mounting of the musical Ragtime was halted for 28 minutes at its June 20 performance when a piece of scenery fell on the stage, injuring two nearby actors during the opening number. According to spokesperson Ian Rand, a door hit the stage vertically and then fell over, thereby causing the minor injuries.

According to the Livent press office, which for privacy reasons did not wish to release the names of the performers, one performer injured a hand but was back in the production the next matinee; the other (as of June 23) "is rarin' to go back in" and is expected for the June 24 performance.

Because the show doesn't play on Mondays, both Livent and the Davidson & Choy Publicity firm had little ready information on the accident but said that, happily, a proverbial doctor was in the house on the night of the accident. A thorough check was then performed on all the safety equipment to make sure no further problems would occur. Playbill On-Line heard about the incident through a Los Angeles reader.

Ragtime had its American premiere June 15 at the Shubert Theatre in Century City, CA. A Broadway opening is scheduled for January 1998 at the new Ford Center theatre on 42nd Street.

The Los Angeles mounting stars original Toronto cast-member Brian Stokes Mitchell (Coalhouse), alongside John Rubinstein as Tateh; LaChanze as Sarah, Marcia Mitzman-Gavin as the mother, Judy Kaye as Emma Goldman, Jason Graae as Houdini, Susan Wood as Evelyn Nesbitt; and John Dossett as the father. Tickets are now on sale for the Shubert Theatre production: call Tele-charge at 800-447-7400. You can also order tickets on Playbill On-Line. For group sales: (800) 832-8440.

Those names include Mark Jacoby (Show Boat) as Father, Marin Mazzie (Passion) as Mother, Audra McDonald (Carousel and Master Class) as Sarah, Steven Sutcliffe as Mother's Younger Brother, and Peter Friedman as Tateh. Directed by Tony-Award winning Frank Galati and produced by theatre mogul Garth Drabinsky, the musical will also feature Jim Corti as Harry Houdini, Lynette Perry as Evelyn Nesbitt, Richard Allen as Booker T. Washington, Larry Daggett as Henry Ford, Camille Saviola as Emma Goldman and Vanessa Townsell-Crisp as Sarah's Friend, Paul Soles as Grandfather, Mike O'Carroll as J.P.
