The Fantasticks, the longest-running musical in the world, celebrates its 39th anniversary on May 3. The evergreen Tom Jones-Harvey Schmidt Off-Broadway musical has played more than 16,000 performances at the 153-seat Sullivan Street Playhouse in New York's Greenwich Village.
Songs in the show include "They Were You," "Try To Remember" and "Plant A Radish."
The Fantasticks opened in 1960 under the direction of Word Baker. The cast included Jerry Orbach as El Gallo, Rita Gardner as The Girl and Kenneth Nelson as The Boy. A recent Fantasticks veteran, Gene Jones, currently appears in his own Fables in Slang at the Melting Pot Theater.
Schmidt and Jones would achieve acclaim for such future works as I Do! I Do!, 110 in the Shade and their retrospective, The Show Goes On, but The Fantasticks remains their most recognized and enduring production.
