Scottish Opera Considering English Tour During Shutdown

Classic Arts News   Scottish Opera Considering English Tour During Shutdown
Scottish Opera may tour England during the 2005-06 season, when it will otherwise be idle, the Scotsman reports.

The struggling company is going dark from June 2005 through June 2006 as part of a Ô£7 million bailout deal with the Scottish Executive, which also included dozens of layoffs. But in order to maintain a public presence, executives hope to stage at least one production during the period.

A tour to England is a possibility because the Arts Council of England and Scottish Arts Council maintain a fund to support cross-border funding.

"Scottish Opera has been exploring many ways of raising money in order to reduce the dark period," an opera spokespan told the Scotsman. "This has included the possibility of winning funds to tour south of the border."
