Scottsboro Boys Cast Album Gets Oct. 12 Release; Kander Sings on Bonus Track

News   Scottsboro Boys Cast Album Gets Oct. 12 Release; Kander Sings on Bonus Track
Almost 50 years after John Kander and Fred Ebb began their collaboration in 1962, a cast album of a new theatre score by the writers is in stores Oct. 12. The Off-Broadway cast album of The Scottsboro Boys from Jay Records features a bonus track of Kander singing "Go Back Home," a ballad from the show.

The musical that borrows an infamous Civil Rights injustice for its source is now on Broadway, playing the Lyceum Theatre following a spring run at Off-Broadway's Vineyard Theatre and a summer engagement at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis. Opening night on Broadway is Oct. 31.

The Broadway production features recent revisions to the script (by David Thompson) and score (by Kander and Ebb), but the cast album is a close approximation of the Broadway score. Kander told in recent days that he doesn't plan to make public which songs are solely by him (music and lyrics) and which he penned with Ebb. When lyricist Ebb died in 2004, Thompson, Kander and director-choreographer Susan Stroman took a break — but then returned to the material several years later. Kander said about two-thirds of the score was complete at the time of Ebb's passing; Kander picked up the pen to complete the score.

Broadway previews began Oct. 7 with some changes to the cast since the earlier Off-Broadway run. Notably, Joshua Henry (American Idiot) is the new central "Scottsboro Boy," Haywood Patterson.

As he did in the Off-Broadway run, John Cullum, the Tony Award winner celebrating 50 years on Broadway this season, plays the Interlocutor in the musical, which reinvents the minstrel show genre to tells its tale.

John Yap is the album's producer. Kander and David Loud are co-producers. The Jay Records release represents the Kander & Ebb score as heard last spring at Off-Broadway's Vineyard Theatre. The orchestrator is Larry Hochman, the musical arranger is Glen Kelly, and the music director is David Loud.
