News of the show's fall Broadway address was reported in the New York Times on May 18.

Helmed by Tony Award-winning director and choreographer Susan Stroman, The Scottsboro Boys originated Off-Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre earlier this year and will be fine-tuned during an eight-week summer run July 31-Sept. 25 at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, MN, prior to its Broadway bow. Barry and Fran Weissler produce the commercial run — with Jacki Barlia Florin and The Vineyard Theatre — and have a hand in the Guthrie engagement.

The Guthrie is the next developmental step for the show prior to Broadway, the Weisslers said. "It's to hone the work, it's to put the finishing touches on it," producer Barry Weissler told Playbill.com. "We have many, many notes from the Vineyard (run): Little things, tweaking, calibration. A little bit touching the music, not so much. Giving a little better back story to each of the boys, things of that sort."

The fact-inspired show by John Kander (music and lyrics), Fred Ebb (lyrics) and David Thompson (book) is about nine black teenagers accused of a crime against white women — a crime they didn't commit — in 1931 Alabama. The collaborators use the theatrical form of a minstrel show to tell the tale. The show takes a flashpoint in American Civil Rights history and makes it sing, dance and sting in the same way Cabaret and Chicago commented on human behavior in corrupt worlds.

Casting for the Guthrie and subsequent Broadway productions has not been announced, but it is expected that the cast and creative team from the world-premiere Vineyard bow will re-create their work. The Broadway production will move forward without original cast member Brandon Victor Dixon, who is attached to star in the musical based on the life of Ray Charles, Unchain My Heart, which will also arrive on Broadway this fall. The musical covers the period 1931-37 and is billed in the Vineyard program as "a fictional play based on real events."
