After a six month search, the Intiman Theatre Company have picked a new artistic director: independent director Bartlett Sher. Sher will take the post vacated by Warner Shook, who shepherded the Seattle company for seven years.

With a regional theatre background that includes the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis, CT's Hartford Stage, Maine's Portland Stage Company, the Idaho Shakespeare Festival and the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, Sher has directed 18 of Shakespeare's plays as well as modern pieces. In fact, it was Sher's 1998 production of Titus Andronicus at the Idaho Shakespeare Festival that helped the Intiman settle on their decision to hire him.

Sported on the cover of the Oct. 1999 "American Theatre" as one of the faces to watch in the new millennium, Sher has worked with Sir Peter Hall of the Royal Shakespeare Company, Garland Wright at the Guthrie and Hartford Stage's Mark Lamos.

Sher will assume his duties at the Intiman March 1.
