News SF's Best of Broadway Sets Lestat, Ring of Fire, Shining City, Chorus Line, Swan Lake, Snowshow and Annie San Francisco's Best of Broadway series may consider a name change to Broadway-bound as the 2005-2006 season includes four pre-Broadway shows (Lestat, Ring of Fire, Shining City, A Chorus Line), two returning premieres (Wicked, White Christmas) and a few newcomers (Swan Lake, Slava's Snowshow, Annie).

Citibank presents the new season under the direction of Carole Shorenstein Hays and Scott E. Nederlander that plays at the company's three stages — Orpheum, Curran and Golden Gate Theatres.

The new season lineup (scheduled to change) is as follows:

 

 

  • Wicked - Summer 2005 - Orpheum Theatre
    After making its world premiere as part of Best of Broadway, the musical which takes a look at the story behind the witches of Oz — good and green — soared on to Broadway. The tour of the Stephen Schwartz-Winnie Holzman musical based on the Gregory Maguire novel now returns. Joe Mantello directs with musical staging by Wayne Cilento for the Marc Platt, Universal Pictures, The Araca Group, Jon B. Platt and David Stone production.

  • Lestat - Fall 2005 at the Curran Theatre
    Warner Brothers Theatre Ventures produces the new musical take on Anne Rice's infamous vampire featuring music by Elton John, lyrics by Bernie Taupin and a book by Linda Woolverton. Robert Jess Roth directs the staging with movement sequences by Matt West.

  • Annie - Fall 2005 - Golden Gate Theatre
    Original director Martin Charnin brings back the tale of Little Orphan Annie and her adventures when the musical featuring music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Charnin and a book by Thomas Meehan comes to the stage anew.

  • White Christmas - Fall 2005 - Orpheum
    Forging a new holiday tradition, The Producing Office, Paul Blake, Sonny Everett and Dan Markley in association with Paramount Pictures present the return of the musical based on the Irving Berlin classic film. David Ives and Paul Blake pen a new book based on the movie featuring music and lyrics by Irving Berlin as directed by Walter Bobbie.

  • Shining City - Fall 2005 - Curran
    By Conor McPherson Following a London debut at Royal Court Theatre, the latest play by Conor McPherson (The Weir) reaches San Francisco for its American premiere. The work set in a Dublin therapist's office follows the mysterious occurrences in a man's home after his wife dies.

  • Swan Lake - Spring 2006 - Orpheum
    Director-choreographer Matthew Bourne's Tony Award-winning dance-meets-theatre piece set to the traditional music of Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky migrates across America on a new 10th anniversary tour. Back Row Productions and NETworks Presentations in association with New Adventures will present the work slated to stop in San Francisco.

  • Slava’s Snowshow - Spring 2006 - Curran
    David J. Foster and Ross Mollison, by arrangement with Slava and Gwenael Allan, present the London-to-Off-Broadway comedy created by the renowned clown Slava. The new theatre piece blends spectacle and visual images with a finale that will blow the audience away.

  • A Chorus Line - Summer 2006 - Curran
    John Breglio presents a Broadway-bound revival of the long-running musical created by Marvin Hamlisch (music), Edward Kleban (lyrics), James Kirkwood and Nicholas Dante (book). Bob Avian directs the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning story of a group of dancers hoping to get chosen at a Broadway musical audition.

  • Ring of Fire - Winter 2006 - Curran
    James Freydberg and William Meade produce a musical that centers on Johnny Cash. Based on a concept by William Meade, writer-director Richard Maltby, Jr. provides theatregoers with a look into "The Man in Black," delving into the legend with his own music (including "I've Been Everywhere," "A Boy Named Sue," "Hurt," and the title track). Designers feature Richard Hoover (set), David Woolard (costumes) and Ken Billington (lighting).
