The Shubert Foundation’s 2017 Grants Program has awarded a record total of $26.8 million to 533 not-for-profit performing arts organizations across the U.S. A total of $5,335,000 was awarded to New York City-based organizations, including major theatre companies The Public, Signature Theatre, New York Theatre Workshop, Roundabout, Playwrights Horizons, St. Ann’s Warehouse, Ars Nova, and Atlantic Theater Company.

Ranging from $10,000 to $325,000, the grants were distributed to a broad spectrum of arts organizations, including not-for-profit theatres, dance companies, and professional theatre training programs.

A number of regional theatres were the recipients of generous grants, including D.C.’s Arena Stage, which received $250, 000, Chicago’s Goodman Theatre, which received $310, 000, and South Coast Repertory, which received $325, 000—the most for any California theatre. West Coast theatres The Geffen Playhouse, La Jolla Playhouse, and Center Theatre Group were also among the recipients.

A number of smaller Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway companies also received grants from the Foundation, including Clubbed Thumb, The Playwrights Realm, SITI Company, Ma-Yi Theater Company, The Flea, Elevator Repair Service, The National Yiddish Theatre - Folksbiene, York Theatre Company, The Wooster Group, and more.

“This year we are delighted to be offering support to a record number of 533 performing arts organizations in locations all around the country,” said Shubert Foundation President, Michael I. Sovern in a press statement. “Our longstanding practice of providing help in the form of general operating support remains unchanged. We are convinced that talented artists and administrators are best able to decide how to use the funds we grant.”

The 2017 grants mark the 37th consecutive year that the Foundation has increased its giving. Since 1977, the program has distributed over $413 million in grants.
