The late Broadway musical Side Show will return to the U.S. East Coast in February 1999, when The Boston Conservatory of Music, Beantown's oldest conservatory, stages the Henry Krieger-Bill Russell show at the Emerson Majestic Theatre.
Tickets, priced at $10-$25, are now on sale at (617) 824-8000. Production dates are Feb. 25-28 with five performance in all.
"I am proud that Side Show is being done by The Boston Conservatory," said Krieger. "I greatly look forward to seeing it." Side Show, which closed on Broadway Jan. 3 after a three-month run, will see its first post-Broadway production this fall at TheatreWorks in Palo Alto, CA., where it will run Oct. 21-Nov. 8.
In a recent interview with Playbill On-Line, composer Krieger said the producers of Side Show hope to bring the musical to London in late 1999, possibly in a revised form. The British engagement may be followed with a U.S. national tour eventually leading back to Broadway.
The California and Boston productions will be separate, regional stagings of the Broadway version of the musical, unconnected to any official tour of the show. The Boston Conservatory of Music was founded in 1867. The school instructs students in music, theatre, and dance, and specialized in turning out so-called "triple threats." Each year the conservatory presents three mainstage theatre productions. Past shows have included the New England premiere of Stephen Sondheim's Assassins.
