The Rat Pack may live again on stage. Elliot Wiseman, longtime manager of the Pack's leader Frank Sinatra, is shaping a musical based on the antics of Sinatra and his swaggering '60s pals Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop.

As of yet there is no title for the project. "We have to line up a director and a producer before we start thinking of titles," Wiseman told Playbill On-Line. He currently is gathering a list of possible directors. Wiseman hopes to have the creative team up and running by late fall or early 1999.

The Rat Pack musical will collect its score from the Sinatra, Martin, and Davis music catalogues. "I don't see creating any new music for this," said Wiseman. Winning access to Sinatra's music is no problem for the manager: Wiseman is the co-executor of Sinatra's estate and is on the board that controls the Chairman of the Board's name and likeness. He and Frank's daughter Tina Sinatra are also in talks with representatives of the Martin and Davis estates.

There is renewed interest in the Rat Pack of late. Two films are in the works, including a Martin Scorcese movie set to star John Travolta as Sinatra, Tom Hanks as Martin, Adam Sandler as Bishop, and Jim Carrey as Jerry Lewis.

The New York Post recently quoted Broadway producer Stewart Lane (1776) as considering a musical about Ol' Blue Eyes, who died May 14 at age 82. Lane said he had asked composer Coleman (The Life, City of Angels, Sweet Charity) to sign on for the venture, tentatively planned for winter 1999. A spokesperson at Cy Coleman's office, however, said the article was "premature," and that the project "may happen and it may not." -- By Robert Simonson
