News "Singin' in the Rain" Shines as Top Movie Musical According to AFI's Top 25 At a Sept. 3 one-night-only presentation of "The Big Picture—AFI’s Greatest Movie Musicals," the American Film Institute (AFI) selections for the best 25 movie musicals of all time were unveiled with "Singin' in the Rain" at the top.

Director John Mauceri and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra performed excerpts from each of the winning musicals, selected by a jury of over 500 "composers, musicians, film artists (directors, screenwriters, actors, editors and cinematographers), critics and historians," according to a release. Audiences were treated to the showtunes played while scenes from the movies were shown on big video screens.

9. "An American in Paris" (1951)
8. "My Fair Lady" (1964)
7. "A Star Is Born" (1954)
6. "Mary Poppins" (1964)
5. "Cabaret" (1972)
