John Oliver of "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" hosted the 61st Annual Writers Guild Awards in New York. Stage and screen star Neil Patrick Harris hosted the West Coast gala. The awards celebrated outstanding achievement in writing for screen, television, radio, news, promotional and video games.

"Milk," about the life and death of Harvey Milk, received the Writers Guild Award for Best Original Screenplay (penned by Dustin Lance Black), while "Slumdog Millionaire" was honored for Best Adapted Screenplay (by Simon Beaufoy).

The Writers Guild of America, West (WGAW) and the Writers Guild of America, East (WGAE) "represent writers in the motion picture, broadcast, cable, and new media industries in both entertainment and news."
