Plans are afoot to videotape the six productions that comprise the Kennedy Center's now-in-progress Sondheim Celebration.

James Taylor, producing director of the Washington Area Performing Arts Video Archives (WAPAVA) confirmed the news to Playbill On-Line June 19. "The plan at this point is that we would tape Sweeney Todd on the 21st of June, Sunday in the Park on the 22nd and Company on the 23rd of June," Taylor told Playbill On-Line. The company, which was founded in 1993, will likely tape the remaining three musicals as well. "I presume so," Taylor said. "We haven't gotten to that point yet." He added with a laugh: "We're overwhelmed by doing this part."

The tapes, which are not available for sale, will find their way to the main DC library, the Martin Luther King Public Library at 901 G Street Northwest. "The tapes will not be in the library immediately. There's a time lag [of about a month] because our staff is quite small," Taylor explained. The Washington Area Performing Arts Video Archives (WAPAVA) was established to preserve significant Washington-area stage performances of theatre, dance, opera, mime and storytelling. The videotapes must be viewed in the library. Notice of 24 hours is required to make arrangements for viewing.

The six Stephen Sondheim musicals that are a part of the much in-the-news Sondheim Celebration are Sunday in the Park with George, Company, Merrily We Roll Along, Sweeney Todd, Passion and A Little Night Music.
