The Bridewell Theatre, which specializes in music theatre in general and Sondheim in particular, is staging - in association with the Sondheim Society - There's Always a Woman, which opens tonight and runs until Feb. 9.
Featuring twenty-six Sondheim numbers from a wide range of his shows, There's Always a Woman is performed by a cast of four (Michael Cahill, Anna Francolini, Grainne Renihan and Jacinta Mulcahy), under the direct of the Bridewell's artistic director, Clive Paget.
The action takes place on a small but stylish set of sand (!) with a backdrop of a velvet curtain, a baby grand piano and another musician on various reed instruments. The cast are in evening dress. A case of New York style in a Fleet Street setting or, to adapt Shakespeare's Henry V, a little touch of Stephen in the night.
