Amy's View examines the relationship between stage legend Esme Allen (Dench) and her daughter Amy. The play begins in 1979 and follows the two women to the present day through Amy's love affair with an uncultured would-be filmmaker.

Amy's View with Dame Judi Dench and Samantha Bond opened first in June 1997 at the National Theatre in London before transferring to the West End's Aldwych Theatre Jan. 17, 1998. The production closed there April 18, 1998. The subsequent Broadway production, also with Dench and Bond, began a limited run at the Barrymore Theatre April 3, 1999. Dench came away from the production a big winner at the Tonys, garnering her second acting prize of 1999 after her Oscar win in March.

Other productions in the South Coast 1999-2000 season include the four world premieres Howard Korder's The Hollow Lands (Jan., 2000), Jose Rivera's References to Salvador Dali Make Me Hot (Jan. 2000), Tom Donaghy's The Beginning of August (May, 2000) and Randy Newman's musical, The Education of Randy Newman (May, 2000).
