The Spoleto Festival USA posted a surplus of $2,385 in 2004, balancing its books for the ninth straight year, a spokesperson confirmed.

The summer series in Charleston, South Carolina, was founded in 1977 as the American counterpart of Gian Carlo Menotti's Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy.

This year's festival, from May 28-June 13, featured the 18-hour Chinese opera The Peony Pavilion, a production of Bellini's I Capuleti e i Montecchi, and DJ Spooky's multimedia performance Rebirth of a Nation.

Total box office receipts were $2.53 million, a new record, and more than half of the festival's performances were sold out.

The 2005 festival is scheduled for May 27-June 12. Officials will announce the program in November.
