Off-Broadway theatre St. Ann's Warehouse has announced its 2017–2018 lineup, featuring a slate of acclaimed productions from around the world. As previously announced, the season will kick off this fall with the American premiere of Duncan Macmillan’s People, Places & Things.
Performances of People, Places & Things will begin in Brooklyn October 19 ahead of an October 25 opening night. The National Theatre/Headlong production, directed by Jeremy Herrin, was lauded in London, with much of the original West End company set to reprise their performances Off-Broadway—including Denise Gough, who was awarded the Olivier Award for her starring role.
In the new year, Irish playwright Enda Walsh returns to St. Ann’s Warehouse with Ballyturk (January 9–28, 2018). His newest work is billed as a “tragicomic, slapstick-yet-meditative play, manic, repetitive, day-to-day ritualizing, set to 80’s pop music.“ The show is presented Off-Broadway in a co-production from The Landmark Productions and Galway International Arts Festival.
In February, Schaubühne Berlin’s production of Returning to Reims—an adaptation of French author Didier Eribon’s memoir of the same name, directed by Thomas Ostermeier—will receive its American premiere at St. Ann’s. Homeland’s Nina Hoss stars in the documentary adaptation of Eribon’s personal account of coming out.
Returning to Reims is a co-production with the Manchester International Festival MIF, Manchester HOME, and Téatre de la Ville, Paris. Performances will run February 4–25, 2018.
In the spring, St. Ann’s will present The Fall from South Africa’s Baxter Theatre Centre at the University of Cape Town. The ensemble play details a South African campus revolt to topple a statue, as told by the students leading the movements. Performances will run March 8–25, 2018.
Later in the season, St. Ann’s teams up with the Onassis Cultural Centre Athens for a production of The Birds, Nikos Karathanos’ contemporary take on Aristophanes’ 414 BC comedy (May 2–13, 2018).
The season will also include two performances of Rufus Wainwright’s Northern Stars, an intimate evening of Canadian songs performed by the composer and singer (April 19 and 20); the annual Labapalooza!: A Mini Festival of Puppet Theater From the Lab (June 26–July 1); and the outdoor sonic installation from Artist Geoff Sobelle Hear Their There Here: A Sound Walk Through Brooklyn Bridge Park.
