News Stage Adaptation of Love in the Time of Cholera Will Premiere Off-Broadway
Repertorio Español will stage the world-premiere theatrical adaptation of Nobel Prize winner Gabriel García Márquez's 1985 novel "Love in the Time of Cholera" Off-Broadway this October.

ACE and HOLA Award winner José Zayas will helm the four-actor staging of the romantic work, which is adapted for the stage by Caridad Svich. Billed as El amor en los tiempos del cólera, the production will be performed in Spanish with English subtitles.

Love in the Time of Cholera will debut Oct. 12 towards an Oct. 15 opening night. The cast will include Zulema Clares, Luis Carlos de La Lombana, Selenis Leyva and Pep Muñoz.

According to Repertorio Español, "Love in the Time of Cholera is a daring four-actor tour-de-force that will bring this famous story to life for the first time ever onstage. This lyrical, imagistic play focuses on an extraordinary love story between a poetically-inclined man named Florentino Ariza and a sensual, practical, yet somewhat elusive woman named Fermina Daza. Florentino swears to win back Fermina no matter the obstacles and consequences, making him both the antagonist and protagonist of this beloved tale. Spanning fifty years in an unnamed Caribbean seaport city at a time when cholera spread throughout the region, the story plays out in a series of short scenic episodes filled with poetry, song, movement and heightened moments of theatricality highlighting Márquez's trademark magical realism."

Márquez's works include "One Hundred Years of Solitude," “No One Writes to the Colonel," "Innocent Eréndira," "Autumn of the Patriarch," "The General in His Labyrinth," "Strange Pilgrims," "Love and Other Demons" and “"News of a Kidnapping."
