Stage Version of Gods and Monsters Will Debut in London | Playbill

News Stage Version of Gods and Monsters Will Debut in London Gods and Monsters, written and directed by Russell Labey, will begin performances Feb. 5, 2015, prior to an official opening Feb. 10 at London's Southwark Playhouse, for a run through March 7.

Based on the novel "Father of Frankenstein" by Christopher Bram - the same source material as for the 1998 Oscar-winning film "Gods and Monsters," it is described in press materials as exploring the sometimes divine, sometimes monstrous landscape of obsession and desire. It revolves around the true-life figure of English film director James Whale (whose credits included "Frankenstein," "The Old Dark House," "The Invisible Man" and "Bride of Frankenstein"), who was was long forgotten by the studios and in reclusive Hollywood retirement after falling victim to a series of strokes. The only demons he fights now are in his head. Handsome new gardener, Clayton Boone, becomes an unlikely friend and unwitting player in Whale's grand finale.

It is produced by Danielle Tarento, who recently brought Dogfight to the Southwark Playhouse, in association with Jason Haig-Ellery.
