Haven Burton

Here, via email, we hear from Broadway's Haven Burton, who will make her solo concert debut Jan. 11 at 54 Below in an evening entitled That's What She Sang. Honoring the women, genres and voices that inspired her, Burton will be joined onstage by Lauren Elder and Clarke Thorell. Show time is 9:30 PM.

What show recently impressed you?
I know I’m a little late to the party, but I recently treated myself with a ticket to see Beautiful. Oh my goodness. I was blown away at how amazing it was. The cast was incredible. Jessie Mueller, I just can’t. It was one of those performances that you watch and think, “She wins, she’s the winner of Broadway.” It was inspiring and intimidating. And, On the Town. I loved it so much. It was perfect. It made me smile ear to ear.

What production are you most excited to see?
There are so many. We don’t get a chance to see many shows. My husband Denny is in Chicago, and with a toddler at home it can be difficult to get out for the evening. I still haven’t seen Matilda, which I really want to see, especially with my good friend Christopher Seiber. I would like to see The Elephant Man — I love going to a play. I am most interested in an evening of immersive theatre. I love productions like Queen of the Night and Sleep No More, and we are always researching other adventure nights.

What play/musical would you most like to revive on Broadway, and which role would you want to play?
Something classic like the Sound of Music, and obviously I would want to play Rolf, jk, Maria. I nannied for many years to support myself in the city; it's a role that has always interested me. More than a revival I would like to originate a role. I have a dream of turning The Umbrellas of Cherbourg into a musical for the stage and playing the Catherine Deneuve role. It's such a beautiful movie and score. It's a French jazz opera — what could be better?

What are your current/upcoming projects?
This week I am preparing for my first solo concert in NYC at 54 Below on 1/11 at 9:30 PM. It’s what I love the most, singing good music with my friends. As for upcoming projects, I am so pleased to be a part a new musical that will be workshopped in March. I don’t think I’m at liberty to say much more, but it's working with an incredible group of people, and I am really excited to watch it develop.
