Broadway's Anastasia Barzee, Leslie Kritzer, Alexander Gemignani, Michael McGrath, Ben Davis, Adam Heller and more star in a Nov. 4-6 concert staging of the 1938 Shakespeare-inspired Broadway musical The Boys From Syracuse as a special event in Shakespeare Theatre Company's season in Washington, DC.

The musical by composer Richard Rodgers, lyricist Lorenz Hart and book writer George Abbott exploits the Roman-inspired Shakespeare farce The Comedy of Errors and features such classic songs as "Falling in Love With Love," "Sing for Your Supper" and "This Can't Be Love." The script-in-hand concert performances play Sidney Harman Hall (610 F Street NW).

The script has been adapted by David Ives, who also adapted The Liar and the current production of The Heir Apparent for STC. Alan Paul, STC associate director, directs this special concert, based on the popular Encores! concert adaptation that was seen at New York City Center in 1997 (a concert cast recording preserves that company's work). An unrelated full Broadway revival (with a book adapted by Nicky Silver) was produced in 2002.

In addition to presenting full productions in its current 25th season, STC is celebrating its milestone by producing special performances of Shakespeare as seen through the lens of song and dance — "musical interpretations of his work performed in concert-style stagings."

The concert of The Boys From Syrcacuse includes musical staging, three fully choreographed production numbers and new costumes, plus a 19-piece on-stage orchestra. The show's music director is George Fulginiti-Shakar. Karma Camp is the choreographer.

The Boys From Syracuse "tells the story of identical twin brothers separated in a shipwreck as children," according to STC notes. "When the two brothers, their wives and servants (also long-lost identical twins) meet in Ephesus, confusion and comedy lead them to discover each other's true identities."

The design team for The Boys From Syracuse includes scenic designer James Noone, costume designer Tracy Christensen, lighting designer Nancy Schertler and sound designer David Budries.

Director Paul joined STC in 2007 as the directing fellow and worked for two seasons as the resident assistant director. At STC, he has directed Twelfth Night (Free For All), numerous ReDiscovery Readings and many special events including STC's 25th Anniversary Gala. He has been the Assistant Director for 13 shows for Michael Kahn, David Muse, Maria Aitken, Jonathan Munby, Rebecca Bayla Taichman, Gale Edwards and Mary Zimmerman.
