The Gotham Chamber Opera, Music-Theatre Group and the Opera Company of Philadelphia commissioned the work that imagines a raid on a polygamist family after allegations of child abuse. 

Rebecca Taichman (The Scene, Dead Man's Cell Phone) directs the opera, which has a libretto by Karam (Speech and Debate, columbinus) and music by Muhly. Neal Goren is conductor. Performances continue through Nov. 19.

The cast includes Caitlin Lynch, Kevin Burdette, Kristina Bachrach, Jennifer Check, Eve Gigliotti, Margaret Lattimore and Jennifer Zetlan.

According to the the official website for the chamber opera: "Dark Sisters... imagines a government raid on a polygamist family. State officials have removed all of the family’s children due to allegations of child abuse, and the women are left to cope with the aftermath, and comfort one another through the night. One woman, Eliza, begins to plot an escape from her family. The second act imagines the women on national TV, faced with justifying their lifestyle to a primetime audience. We see into each of their minds and witness Eliza and one of her sister wives make a series of decisions that will shatter the family."

The opera has set and video design by Leo Warner and Mark Grimmer, costume design by Miranda Hoffman, lighting design by Donald Holder and choreography by Annie-B Parson.

The Opera Company of Philadelphia will produce Dark Sisters in June 2012.
