Stephen Sondheim Announces Radical New Merrily We Roll Along Change | Playbill

Off-Broadway News Stephen Sondheim Announces Radical New Merrily We Roll Along Change The cult favorite, currently running Off-Broadway, will get a new lease on life thanks to some innovative work from Sondheim and Fiasco Theatre Company.

Merrily We Roll Along has long been a show that fans have wanted to save from itself. After an agonizingly brief initial run on Broadway, starring Jim Walton, Lonny Price, and Ann Morrison, the musical has been through several different incarnations, all of which preserved the original's backward chronology.

Until now.

Admitting that it was 1981 and "we were stoned out of our mind," composer Stephen Sondheim has agreed to a radical new reworking of the show, one that finds the story unfolding in traditional chronological fashion, just in time for April 1. Watch Sondheim, the Off-Broadway production's current stars, and previous Merrily cast members react to the news in the video from Roundabout Theatre Company above.

Check out the latest revival of Merrily We Roll Along through April 14, and happy April 1!
