The latest by Shelagh Stephenson, whose Olivier Best Comedy-winning The Memory of Water and An Experiment With an Air Pump both crossed the Atlantic in recent seasons, ends its current London run this weekend. Five Kinds of Silence, a drama about secrets tearing apart an isolated family, started previews May 31 at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith. Silence officially opened June 2 and has run 40 performances through July 8.

Stephenson first penned Silence as a radio play in 1996, where it won Writer’s Guild and Sony Award for Best Radio Drama. The current stage version will feature an original score by Barrington Pheloung, who penned the music for TV’s “Inspector Morse.”

Starring in Silence are Gina McKee (filmdom’s “Notting Hill” and “Naked”), Linda Bassett (“East is East”), Tim Pigott-Smith and Lizzy McInnerny. Designing the show are Hugh Vanstone (lighting) and Peter McKintosh (set).

Ian Brown, who staged Moscow Stations Off-Broadway and Goodnight Children, Everywhere at the Royal Shakespeare Company, is directing Five Kinds of Silence.
