Stephen Eich, former managing director of Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre Company, assumes the same role at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles beginning Aug. 15.

A veteran of commercial and not-for-profit venture, Eich takes over for outgoing founding managing director Lou Moore, recently named executive director of the newly created Beverly Hills Cultural Center.

Eich was the managing director at Steppenwolf during what was that nonprofit's most high-profile period, 1979-1995. Eich produced over 125 productions there, including the 1990 Tony Award-winning Best Play, The Grapes of Wrath. With colleague Randall Arney (who is now artistic director at Geffen), he oversaw the emergence of an internationally recognized theatre and built a new $9.5 million dollar home for the company.

He produced Steve Martin's award-winning Picasso at the Lapin Agile at Steppenwolf before taking it to Los Angeles' newly re christened Geffen Playhouse, then to New York, Chicago, San Francisco and England. He was co-producer of Paul Simon's Broadway musical The Capeman.

Gilbert Cates is the producing director at the five-year-old Geffen Playhouse. The Geffen's 2000-2001 season starts Sept. 26 with the Los Angeles premiere of Donald Margulies' Pulitzer Prize-winning Dinner With Friends.
