Steven Berkoff, the actor who created and successfully toured Shakespeare's Villains, is a villain himself to U.S. immigration.
While touring his solo show about the Bard's bad boys, Berkoff was detained June 25 by U.S. Immigration and Naturalization officials in the Detroit area and deported, the Associated Press reported. His June 26 engagement in the Ann Arbor Summer Festival and a June 27 gig in Grand Rapids, MI, were canceled after he was sent home on a jet to London.
The reason for the deportation was a visa violation, the news service reported. From London, he told The Grand Rapids Press: "It was a nightmare. I have never been prevented from working in America before."
He allegedly violated the stipulations of a previous work visa issued in 1997, The Ann Arbor News reported. He was told he stayed beyond the prescribed limit of his previous visa.
