There has been much speculation throughout the season as to whether performers in solo shows — Elaine Stritch in Elaine Stritch At Liberty or Bea Arthur in the just-closed Bea Arthur: Just Between Friends — would be eligible for Tony nominations in the acting categories. A call to Keith Sherman & Associates, the Broadway press agency that has handled the Tony Awards for several years, cleared up any confusion. As previously announced, the Tony Administration Committee decided on April 11 that four shows — Elaine Stritch at Liberty, Bea Arthur on Broadway: Just Between Friends, John Leguizamo's Sexaholix... a love story and Barbara Cook's Mostly Sondheim — would be eligible in the relatively new category "Special Theatrical Event." This decision makes performers in these productions ineligible for acting nominations, as actor/actress nominations are only possible for performers in Broadway plays and musicals. These shows have been deemed "special theatrical events" rather than plays or a musicals.

In related Tony Award news, the next meeting of the Tony Administration Committee will be held Thursday, May 2. And, the announcement of the Tony nominations will be held on May 6 at Sardi's Restaurant. Steven Weber and Jennifer Jason Leigh, both now on Broadway, will announce the nominees.
