This program offers the participants three weeks of focused time at a working ranch in Wyoming. The artists receive lodging, meals and transportation.

Philip Himberg, the Sundance Institute Theatre Program's producing artistic director, selects the artists. Mame Hunt, the lead dramaturg for the Theatre Program, will be in residence as a creative advisor at Ucross.

Bock's plays include Swimming in the Shallows, Five Flights, The Thugs, The Typographer's Dream, The Shaker Chair, The Drunken City and The Receptionist.

Doran's plays include Living Room in Africa, 2 Soldiers and The Parents' Evening and her adaptations include Great Expectations (Off-Broadway), Maeterlinck’s The Blind (Classic Stage Company) and Peer Gynt (directed by Andre Serban).

Harrison's plays include Act a Lady (2006 Humana Festival, Portland Center Stage), Amazons and Their Men, Finn in the Underworld (Berkeley Rep), Kid-Simple (2004 Humana Festival, SPF Festival) and Fit for Feet (2003 Humana Festival). Santiago-Hudson's plays include Lackawanna Blues, which he turned into a film for HBO. Foley has written music and lyrics for The Hidden Sky, among other works. McLaughlin’s plays include Days and Nights Within, A Narrow Bed and Infinity's House.

Projects that began their life at the Ucross retreat include Doug Wright’s play I Am My Own Wife, Adam Guettel and Craig Lucas’ musical The Light in the Piazza and plays by Tanya Barfield, David Adjmi, Marcus Gardley, Steven Lutvak and Robert Freedman.

The Sundance Institute Theatre Program includes The Theatre Lab at the Sundance Resort in Utah and the Playwrights Retreat at Ucross — both of which support playwrights and directors at different crucial points in the creative process — along with the Theatre Lab at White Oak in northern Florida, which focuses on the development of new work in musical and ensemble theatre.
